Description:
Holland & Holland 12 gauge SxS hammer gun. With a serial number of 8667 I have to speculate that this gun was made in the early 1880’s and even with that early date is a fairly modern gun!
The 28” Damascus steel barrels are Nitro Prooved with an LP/11 stamp. The barrel flat stampings indicate: 18.7 bore diameters (.738) and 70mm (2 ¾”) chambers, which when measured are exactly that! The chokes measure .005” (light skeet) and .020” (modified) or perfect upland game chokes! Wall thickness are .035” minimum in each barrel. So minimal there is no worry about the integrity of the barrels.
For full disclosure: There is an almost unnoticeable bulge near the muzzle of the left barrel. Also there is interior pitting in the right barrel just ahead of the chamber. Note that the London Proof of 2011 was completed with the bulge and with the pitting!!
The stock and forearm are beautiful and are either restocked or very professionally refinished and re-checkered. The dimensions are modern with a 14 ¼” LOP to the original butt plate, 1 ½” DAC and 2 ¼” DAH with neutral to slight cast favoring a right-hand shooter.
The gun weighs a mere 6 lbs. 1 oz. So even though it is chambered for 2 ¾” loads I would be inclined to shoot light 2 ½” loads to keep recoil to a minimum.
This H&H will make and wonderful game gun and a fun vintage sporting gun.
