Description:
This is perhaps one of Smith & Wesson’s most famous models. The 29 was intended to allow the shooter to have a revolver possessing better knockdown power than any 357 Magnum chambered revolver. This is a “Dash-2” variation. This was the last variation of the 29 to have the traditional S&W pinned barrel. Other features included are: an 4.0-inch half-lug barrel, square butt frame, .500-inch grooved target trigger, .500-inch target hammer, ramp front sight with red insert, and white outline on the rear sight blade. The serrated backstrap has 10 grooves. The grips are traditional Goncalo Alves checkered target grips. Smith & Wesson refers to these as “target stocks.” The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured between 1979 and 1980. The 29’s popularity increased drastically in 1971 with the release of the film Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood. In the real life, the Model 29 has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting. It has also been used by law enforcement, although never on an “as issue” basis. This example is in good to excellent condition with some light wear. There are small spots of pitting on the cylinder, usually within the flutes. The hammer and trigger retain most of their case hardening but exhibit some micro pitting on the sides. The cylinder face has a fair level of powder burn, though some Flitz polishing compound could solve that issue. The bore is in excellent condition. There is a letter “N” stamped on the back face of the cylinder and on the left side of the grip frame underneath the grip. This is normally an indication that the revolver was factory refinished in nickel at some point, though that cannot be determined for certain without checking the factory records. The finish has that milky appearance, which suggests the finish is at least almost as old as the gun itself if not the original finish. Mechanically, the trigger has an excellent single action pull which is very short, and a long but consistent double action pull. One very nice feature of the 29 is that like any 44 Magnum revolver, it will also safely fire the .44 S&W Special and .44 S&W Russian cartridges in addition to the .44 Magnum. This allows the owner to practice with the gun frequently and not have to worry about hurting their wrist. Another, appreciable aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a desirable feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature. There is no box.
