Description:
This is a very rare variation of John Browning’s Model 8 rifle. It was produced in Belgium for a short period with only around 4,913 units produced, mostly between 1910 and 1929, with the last 32 being assembled from spare parts until 1936. As part of the contract between Browning and F.N., none of the rifles were officially imported into the U.S. By comparison, over 70,000 examples of the Remington Model 8 were manufactured in the USA. It is most remembered for its use by law enforcement in the ambush of Bonnie and Clyde in 1934. Designed by John Moses Browning, the famed inventor of the 1911 pistol and many other firearms, the Patent 1900, Model 8, and the later Model 81 used the long-recoil method of operation, same as used in the Browning Auto-5 shotgun and the Browning M2 .50-caliber machine gun. This type of operation was used due to its greater reliability over gas-operation which back then could not be done with the powders then available. The only drawback to this method of operation is, in addition to the primary recoil movement of the ignition of the cartridge, there is a second, smaller recoil bump from the barrel stopping at its rear most position before moving back into the forward position. While this may sound uncomfortable, from personal experience it is not is not even noticeable. The Patent 1900 has a fixed 5-round magazine. It was only chambered in the .35 Remington round. The example shown here was made roughly around 1927-1928 and is in good condition for its age (94-95 years old). Effectively, it retains 90-95 percent of the finish. Most of the wear is on the receiver, though some exists on the barrel shroud as well. The screw retaining the tang sigh is a little rough on the edges. The tang sight is rotated a little to right, but this could be corrected. There is an insect hole on the left side of the stock as well as a small gouge near the cheek rest. Otherwise the wood furniture exhibits some light nicks or dings. The finish is well maintained. As can be seen in the pictures, a Weaver scope mount and rings were added. The mount was removed to inspect the condition of the markings underneath and it can be gladly stated that the markings remain unaltered. The receiver was drilled and tapped above them. Mechanically, the Patent 1900 is in great shape, and operates as it should. The trigger pull is consistent and short. The bolt is in excellent shape with little in the way of pitting or rust. The bore is in pristine condition. Like most hunting rifles, this one was fired infrequently.
