It was originally introduced in 1922 and was a descendent of the Model 1891 lever rifle. Between 40,000 and 50,000 were built until 1938 when the Model 39A was introduced. The Model 39 features a 24-inch long octagonal barrel, S-shaped pistol-grip stock, hard rubber butt plate, one piece trigger, open sights, no cross bolt safety, and of course, has a takedown action that aids both cleaning and transporting. Sadly, Marlin records for the serial numbers of firearms made between 1906 and 1948 are usually unavailable. Thus pinning a year of manufacture on this rifle would be difficult. For now, it can be said the rifle is between 84 and 100 years old. Finish has turned to a patina. There is light pitting on the barrel and receiver. The wood furniture exhibits the usual wear but no cracks. Someone did lightly etched a 6-digit number in the right side of the stock. This is shown in the pictures. The bore is in excellent shape. Please note the serial number has an “S” prefix. In this timeframe of Marlin firearms, the “S” indicates the rifle should only be fire with standard pressure .22 ammo. No high velocity ammunition like the Velocitor or Mini-Mag should be used. The action is tight and has no hint of looseness.
