Description:
***   SOLD   ***   Thomas Johnson no. 3422 bar-in-wood 16 bore hammergun was made circa 1884 and a handsome gun it is. No. 1 of a pair this svelte beauty has Best Scroll engraving and highly figured French walnut stock and forearm. It is known that James Purdey made hammerguns for Thomas and this is one of them. It is tight on face, has a grip safety, and rebounding hammers. At 6lb 6oz it is an easy gun to carry for a day afield.   ***   The 30” sleeved steel barrels are chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells and have extractors. They are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib that is inscribed “Thomas Johnson (Late Parson) Swaffham Norfolk”. The barrels show a London proof mark from 2002 for blackpowder. With their ample wall thickness these barrels would be safe to use with sensible low pressure loads like those from RST and Fiocchi Shooting Dynamics. The right barrel is bored 0.668 and has a constriction of 0.015 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033. The left barrel is bored 0.667 and has a constriction of 0.035 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.035.   ***   The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of classic and highly figured French walnut with a thin horn buttplate. The checkering is quite worn but that can easily and inexpensively addressed by a competent stockmaker. Interestingly the stock looks very solid with no visible cracks along the underside where you typically find them on a bar-in-wood. Stock dimensions are 14-3/16” including the thin horn buttplate by 1-5/8” by 2-1/8”. Cast off for the righthand shot.   ***   This is a handsome and great handling example of a bar-in-wood hammergun. Rarely seen in 16 bore and made for Johnson by James Purdey. Outstanding engraving and beautiful wood. Suitable for game and clays. Don’t let it get away.  ***   Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. Please note that the photographs are part of the description. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when the gun is delivered to purchaser’s FFL dealer. Returns at buyer’s expense.
