FRENCH Antique Late 1700s Double Barrel Pistol
Nice .50 Caliber Twin Barrels with GOLD ACCENTS
Here we present an antique French Double Barrel Pistol, made circa the late 18th Century in Charleville, France and converted from flintlock to percussion circa the 1840s. This side by side would have started out life as a flintlock and period converted when the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced. This pistol is quite large and has twin .50 caliber bores when the norm of the day was a single bore—an immediate follow up shot was a valued trait to be sure. A person armed with one or two of these was certainly as well armed as just about any one man could be. Front sight is mounted in the center. This is a handsome pistol and compares well to the typically British Howdah pistols of the day. While this very well have been made for use against tigers, it is quite likely that it would also have a strong effect on humans.
The overall condition is good. Strong actions. Both bores are in good shape, remain clear and have aged patinas. This example sports a nicely carved stock/grip with less than average wear for its age (minor dents and dings). “PATÉ/CHARLEVILLE” marked locks. Bright gold accents atop both barrels. Here is an impressive example of a massive, big-bore pistol from the 18th Century!
