Description:
This outstanding pair of 12 gauge side-by-side Game guns were custom made by Purdey for the late distinguished journalist, army veteran, and sportsman, Neil Sheehan, a 1988 Pulitzer Prize winner for his book on the Vietnam War, "A Bright Shining Lie". Mr. Sheehan joined the New York Times in 1964 as a reporter, obtained the Pentagon Papers in 1971, and broke the story in the New York Times, a series on the secret history of America in Vietnam. The New York Times was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service as a result of the publication of this exposure.
The Purdey Pair was completed in 1993 and is in outstanding condition, including a double leather trunk case with canvas cover, factory accessories including snap caps, turnscrews, oil bottle, cleaning rod, and spare firing pins. Also included are three custom-made Kalispel heavy-duty aluminum cases with canvas covers designed for air or ground shipment and two Brady canvas/leather cases for field use. In addition, there is an extra set of recoil reducing stocks made for the guns by the noted stock maker, Paul Hodgins, as requested by Mr. Sheehan to address an injury he incurred in an auto accident.
The guns are proofed to 3-1/4 tons and for shot charges up to 1-1/4 oz. to accommodate the heavier loads of some game cartridges. The barrels are 28" with 2-3/4" chambers. The barrel walls are .033 with bore diameters of .727 and made with a hidden third bite and the single trigger actions are strengthened with side clips. The barrels are chocked IC/M. The LOP is 14-3/4" including the 3/4" Purdey leather covered pad. The Drop is 1-1/2" x 2-1/4" with a slight cast-on for a left-hand shooter, but could be easily adjusted for a right-hand shooter if desired, although the current dimensions seem to perform well for a right-hand shooter. The weight of each gun is 7lbs 2oz. reflecting the strengthening of the guns as requested by Mr. Sheehan.
