The 34" round .69 caliber barrel has a fair rifled bore that should clean better. There are no proof marks on the barrel, no inspection cartouches on the stock, no finger spur on the trigger guard, and no right sight, all evidence of the fact that this is a Whitney “Good and Serviceable“ arm. All metal is bright with brown staining. The stock is very good with no cracks or chips and with a few areas of wood fill. The lock is the first type with “U.S. / Whitneyville" followed by the large eagle-shield flag stamp. It is dated “1863" at the tail. The Navy authorized Whitney to use these locks on their “Good and Serviceable" guns. The swivels and ramrod are present. The action functions correctly. If you’re a Whitney collector or into secondary martial/ militia rifles, this rifle would fit your collection. SOLD Antique: Yes |
