Description:
EXTREMELY RARE REMINGTON-KEENE U.S. NAVY ISSUE .45-70 RIFLE. This is one of the absolute scarcest and hardest to acquire primary issue U.S. Navy rifles. Approximately 250 of these special full stocked bolt action tubular magazine rifles were issued to the navy in April of 1880. There is a wealth of information on these rifles including description, markings etc. as well as where and when they were issued in the books: U.S. MILITARY BOLT ACTION RIFLES by Bruce Canfield and RIFLES OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY AND MARINE CORPS 1866-1917 by John D. McAulay. To quote from Canfields book: "Given the fact that only 250 were procured and that most of the rifles remained in constant use aboard Navy warships for a decade or so, there aren't  many extant specimens... It is almost an 'unknown' U.S. Martial arm today." Canfield also notes, "...that nearly all surviving specimens are in well-worn condition..." Overt the last decades, I have only seen a very few U.S. Navy Remington-Keenes and this is probably the best conditioned example I've encountered. This one has the correct U.S. over anchor stamping on the left side of the barrel ahead of the receiver with the inspector stamp "P" over "WWK"  on the right side. It retains all the Remington markings and patent dates on the top of the bolt. It also has the correct rear sight and sling swivels. The barrel  and receiver retain fine , deep only very lightly aged blue and aside from one small crack (but not chipped) small area of the stock behind the upper tang, the wood is solid and fine with only normal light handling marks. The action is crisp and the bore is excellent- according to the above mentioned books, these rifles were shot quite a bit as practice and training as well as in some engagements. It is mentioned in one of the books that the rear of the magazine tube was encased in rubber to protect the tip of the first cartridge placed in the magazine and while not much there, remnants of that fragile part are included with the rifle! In all, perhaps one of the best examples extant.
