Description:
Next to the Mauser Model 1898, the Model of 1896 is one of the most well-known Mauser Models. Designed and ordered for Sweden, the Model of 1896 was based on previous Mauser models, but incorporating improvements suggested by the Swedish. All Swedish Mausers, whether built in Sweden or at the Mauser factory in Oberndorf, Germany, were fabricated using Swedish-supplied vanadium, nickel, and copper. The rifles are known for both their strength and their resistance to corrosion. All are chambered for the excellent 6.5x55 Swedish round. Each rifle was test proofed with this round loaded to 66,000 psi (c. 55,000 CUP), proving the rifle’s design is indeed strong. The 6.5 Swed is one of the few European cartridges to gain a foothold in the United States, and today enjoys a large following. It has become extremely popular for deer hunting and is also at home in target shooting competitions. Most American and European ammo manufacturers produce 6.5 Swedish ammunition. The Model of 1896 features a cock-on-closing action just as older Mauser models did. One of the notable things about the Swedish Mauser m/1896 is its length, the rifle being nearly 50 inches in length. Needless to say, carbine versions were also made. Made in 1943, the bluing on this example is mostly intact except near the end of the barrel. Unfortunately, three parts do not match the rifle, the cocking piece, the safety, and the bolt sleeve bearing the number 349 instead of 306. The cleaning rod bears the number 191. The stock has seen an arsenal repair with the lower buttstock being replaced with a different type of wood. The rest of the wood bears the usual dings, mars, or small scratches one would expect to find in a military arm. The bore is in excellent shape, as would be expected of a Swedish rifle. The threading at the muzzle is a bit dirty but in good shape. There are small import markings on the bottom of the barrel. The bayonet that accompanies this rifle is in excellent shape which makes sense as it is covered in a fine layer of Cosmoline. It bears the number 606.
