Description:
SOLD  ** CHURCHILL Boxlock Ejector, 20 Gauge, Made in London 1954, Excellent Plus

Description: E.J. Churchill (Gunmakers) Ltd., marked XXV in gold with 25” chopper lump barrels. (An early post-war boxlock with chopper lump barrels is a rare encounter).
A Best Gun built when the maker was still making them at Orange Street, Gunworks, Leicester Square in London, a maker with an HRH Royal warrant. In excellent plus condition, its 25” ejector chopper lump barrels were proved in Birmingham ( .614”) at 1 ounce with 2 ¾” chambers. Chokes are .003 (Skeet 1) and .016 (Imp. Mod.).  Wall thickness is .036” for both the right and the left. With double triggers, the Action locks up with the proven Purdey double underlug system.

The English walnut stock has pleasing grain and warm rich colors. It is shaped with swept straight-hand stock at 14 ½” x 1 ½” x 2 1/8”over a full face checkered butt. The splinter forearm has an Anson frontal release and engraved steel diamond in the center of the pattern. The hand checkering is a point pattern with 24 lpi exquisitely chiseled with a combination of single and double borders. This gun was built with cast off, checkered left-side of the break lever and trigger guard off-set to the right from the true straight line of the barrel and receiver. The gun points like a dream and is near perfect for the right hand shooter. It has great 20 gauge weight at 6 lbs. 1 oz.

Engraving coverage is period scroll engraving about 85% full featuring Churchill’s conservative color case-hardened finish on the receiver, upper tang,  lower receiver tang, forearm diamond and forearm release. The blued components consist of the trigger bow, sub-lower tang, floorplate, forearm iron, break lever, and barrels – displaying a well-planned metal finish schedule that lends to the overall handsome look of the gun.

Condition: The original barrel blue at 97%, original case colors at 96% remaining bright and vivid, original stock finish at 96-97%, and checkering is at 99%, The barrels inside & out remain in excellent plus condition and completely free of any dings or pits, The striking on the barrels is excellent. One inscription reads: E.J.CHURCHILL. (GUNMAKERS.) LTD.
A second one reads: ORANGE STREET. GUNWORKS.  LEICESTER SQUARE. LONDON

It is cased in the original maker's leather cornered leather trunk with the proper trade labels. The barrels remain on the face and have a pronounced chime. On walk up bird shooting over dogs 25" barrels work absolutely as efficient as longer barrels in the hands of the average upland hunter. Here is a totally original game gun inside and out that remains in excellent condition with mechanics that will last another lifetime.

About the Maker:
E. J. (Edwin John) Churchill set up shop in 1891 at 8 Agar St. Strand, London. He moved to Leicester Square in 1925 and then to Orange Street in 1934 in Leicester Square. E. J. Churchill died in 1910 and his son, Robert Churchill who operated the company after him, died in 1958. In 1960 Atkin, Grant & Lang were operating on 7 Bury Street and by 1971 the firm was operating as Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang at 7 Bury Street. In 1976 the business was moved to 61 Pall Mall, St James's. E.J. Churchill Gunmakers restarted in 1985 by Mr. Don Masters, and to this day is on the West Wycombe Estate and have been there since the late 1980s. Their guns today are mostly made by Arrieta of Spain.

For a traditional royal warrant maker of best guns, Churchill broke traditions, or set them, depending on how you look at it. English guns in 20 gauge were rare and typical best guns made with 20 gauge chopper lump ejector barrels were built on sidelock actions.  Churchill proved a best gun could have these features in a best-made boxlock, still with the proven Purdey double underlug system. Churchill also broke tradition by proving in the field and at the shooting range, that 25” barrels could be as effective as long barrels in the right hands. Their guns took the model name XXV for this and the movement became popular with customer orders of other makers requesting barrel lengths of 25.”
