Description:
Plant's Mfg. Co. Front Loading Army .42 Caliber cup-primer revolver, manufactured in the mid 1860s. This Plant's revolver is a Third Model Type 1 with a brass frame, plated in nickel, with walnut grips (one is chipped) and a solid ribbed barrel. The cylinder mechanism is rather unique, being a front-loading design, made to circumvent the Rollin White bored-through-cylinder patent, exclusively held by S&W at the time. Although these pistols are often referred to as "Army" revolvers, no gov't contract records have been found, however Civil War soldiers were known to have purchased these pistols as personal sidearms. The pistol is in great condition for its age, with a (previously mentioned) chipped right side grip panel, and some plate flaking in areas, that shows the brass frame underneath. The action mechanism works exceptionally well, with nice lockup and timing, nice chamber surfaces, and only a few dark areas in the bore. Please refer to the photos prior to purchase. This is a wonderful historical artifact with a very early serial #, don't miss out on owning a piece of US cartridge development history! No FFL required. Shipping $25.00 / USPS
