Description:
Serial #34, .50 RF, 30" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This rifle is not equipped with a Stabler cut-off, and has retained about 40-50% of the original blue along the barrel, that has turned to an overall dark plum-brown patina mixing with pewter gray on the balance. Additionally, there is a line of small impact marks along the left side of the breech. The frame has and overall mottled pewter patina that carries over onto the lever. The walnut forend and buttstock were refinished long ago, and have numerous scattered bruises and marks throughout, as well as a series of hairline cracks along the comb. The magazine tube is in very good shape with a functional spring and follower and the mechanism is tight and functions flawlessly. The Canadian Government procured a number of Starr, Spencer, and Peabody rifles to arm their militia against Fenian cross-border raids. Some of the Spencer rifles were procured directly by the British Government and were “W^D" stamped, however those acquired directly by Canada from the US were unmarked. This rifle was purchased in Canada, and was most probably one of the stop-gap guns used against the Fenians. This is a fine Spencer overall, with a fantastic low serial number, and would make a great addition to a collection. Antique
