Description:
S A L E   P E N D I N G  . . . . .    SHOOTABLE BORE!!!....LAYAWAY?... ...   .50 caliber. 21.5" round barrel. SN: 1563. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut stock and forend. Single shot percussion breechloading military carbine with tilting barrel action. Standard American Machine Works markings read MANUFACTURED BY/AM'N. M'CH'N. WKS./SPRINGFIELD MASS followed by ADDRESS/POULTNEY & TRIMBLE/BALTIMORE U.S.A. and SMITH'S PATENT/JUNE 23, 1857. on the left side of the receiver. Matching serial numbers on the frame and barrel. A crisp LFR sub-inspection is present on the left barrel flat and the soft script JH cartouche of Joseph Hannis is present at the wrist. A small block JH is present on the stock comb, forward of the buttplate tang. Carbine retains the sling bar with the ring missing, the correct adjustable ladder military rear sight and the original front sight base with German silver blade. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number record books did not find this serial number or any Smith Carbine number particularly close to it.
Condition:
Fine. Bore  fine, mostly bright with fine rifling and lightly scattered oxidation. Barrel with much of the blued finish, showing some thinning, fading and wear. Barrel latch with much of the original bright blue. Receiver mostly a silvery gray with minute hints of case colors. Markings in metal clear and crisp, weaker in wood. Mechanically functional. Wood lightly sanded with scattered bumps, dings and mars Action is strong. Full cock is solid, but does not make a "click."..........2nd firearm ships FREE with this one!
