ZOUVE Dark blue wool jacket with gold bullion tape trim on body and sleeves. Collar secured by hook and eye, designed to be worn open. Black silk body lining with white sleeve linings. eer suggested a connection with the Civil War Cincinnati Zouave Guard, Co. D 2nd Ohio Volunteers, and a framed modern copy photo of a member of that unit accompanies the jacket, as you can see it clearly is almost identical. Other units are possible, but bullion braid rather than worsted wool trim suggests a Civil War date, as do extensive machine sewing Uniforms and drill inspired by French-Algerian light infantry took hold in America in the late 1850s. Zouave units remained popular in state forces through the 1870s and use in drill exhibitions extended long after. CONDITION: Very good plus. No moth damage. Seams secure, bullion trim has some age expected surface losses and is detached in places. All things considered this Magnificent and extremely rare piece displays beautifully and will add an Authentic element to any CW or Uniform Collection.
