Gold-plated finish, full-length magazine, deluxe D-grade checkered highly figured walnut stock with pistol grip and checkered hard rubber Marlin buttplate, checkered fore-end. Two-line barrel marking: MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO.  NEW-HAVEN, CT U.S.A. / PAT'D JAN. 1887. APRIL 2, 1889, AUGUST 12, 1890. March 1, 1892. Top of receiver marked MARLIN SAFETY, tang marked MODEL / 1897 under peep sight base. Adjustable peep tang sight, dovetailed blade front sight with ivory bead. Receiver profusely engraved with flowing Arabesque foliate scrolls with punch-dot shading with a dot-matted central panel in low relief on the reverse showing a buck in full flight, with the obverse panel depicting two squirrels in a tree as the central theme the panel in low relief. A small circular panel on the bottom of the receiver depicts a wolf's head. All of the surrounding metal shows the foliate scrolls, which extend about 3.5" onto the barrel, with the lever and hammer adorned with geometric border patterns. The upper receiver combines the scrolls with starburst foliate patterns and geometric borders. The work is most likely that of Conrad Ulrich Jr. who worked at Marlin during this period as their master engraver. This is one of the very finest and rarest of all decorated Marlins, an exhibition gold-plated and engraved Marlin Model 1897 rifle that is the ultimate in a .22 caliber antique lever action. This gun shipped on the same day, November 10, 1897 as the Ulrich engraved gold Model 1893 rifle offered in this sale. These splendid rifles were likely produced for display at the California Golden Jubilee held in San Francisco January 24-29, 1898, hence their brilliant arresting gold finish and the superb exhibition quality engraving.

Excellent. Retains nearly all of the gold plating with only the most minor thinning, perfect markings . Mint bore and action. The stocks with nearly all the factory high polish piano varnish finish. The most remarkable and beautiful antique Marlin it has been our pleasure
