UNDERWOOD Elliot-Fisher was the most diverse manufacturer of M1 Carbine parts out of 11 manufacturers. They also supplied the other M1 Carbine manufacturers with thousands of parts through the lateral support program. The total number of complete M1 Carbines serialized to UNDERWOOD was 545,616; the third most of the 11 manufacturers.
UNDERWOOD had the reputation of producing their own very high quality barrels and were also a primary supplier of barrels to M1 Carbine manufacturers Quality Hardware, National Postal Meter, S'G' Saginaw Grand Rapids, I'P' Irwin Pederson, and Standard Products. The barrels are all stamped with UNDERWOOD, the month and year, and the Famous Flaming Bomb behind the front sight. UNDERWOOD also produced and supplied M1 Carbine manufacturers with 35 other various parts; including springs, pins, plungers and screws.
The UNDERWOOD Carbine I am selling here has all of the correct parts that the U.S. Ordnance Department required for M1 Carbine production. I totally disassemble the M1 Carbines I sell and inspect the integrity, wear, and function. I ensure that each part is correct for the manufacturer, serial number, production date, production block, production type, and correct manufacturer stamping. The unstamped parts I validate by pictures and/or measurements. I use the book "Comprehensive Guide - M1 CARBINE" by Roger Larson as my final identifying reference. With 829 pages of text and other M1 Carbine history and information, and over 4,000 high quality photographs it is my primary source which enable my data surveys to be consistent.
The rifle I am selling here is from the latter part of the first production block with the UNDERWOOD barrel dated 6 - 43. Based on the condition of the metal parts finish and wear I can say that most of the parts are original to this rifle. The barrel bore has very strong riflings and lands, the slide stop slot on the receiver rail shows very little wear. These are two very good indicators of use and condition. Take a look at the pictures. The HIGH WOOD STOCK and HAND GUARD are both stamped PU along with the ORIGINAL CARTOUCHE STAMPS on the right butt stock. The stock set has no cracks, damage, or repairs and has been re-finished. The barrel band is an original replacement with the three weld scars not a reproduction.
UNDERWOOD has made identifying the stamped parts easy by using the mark .U. on those parts; with the exception being the stock and hand guard stamped PU ( Pederson Bros.) . This rifle is over 78 years old but still has some parts that are scarcely seen on an M1 Carbine of this age; Type 1 Operating Slide, Type 1 Dog Leg Hammer, Rear Sight Leaf stamped .U., Type 2 Safety, Diagonal Pattern Butt Plate, Type 1 Barrel Band, IU Oiler, and High Wood Stock. I have three pages of data sheets and over 150 pictures of this rifle that I can share with you if you are further interested.
Also included are an Original IU Stamped Oiler, TWO Original 15 Round Magazines Stamped .U., and a high quality reproduction sling, dual magazine butt stock pouch, field manual, and zippered canvas carry case. I do have a few original magazine pouches and slings available at an additional cost.
