Less than 1,000 Made, Part Octagonal/Round Barrel
Here we present an antique Ethan Allen & Co. .32 Single Shot Deringer Pistol, made circa 1865-71 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Less than 1,000 are estimated to have been made in a myriad of different variations of barrel shape, length, lockup, etc. The Single Shot Deringer was designed to be a close quarters conceal and carry defense pistol in a day in which almost everyone carried a firearm. Whether in a busy Eastern city or a dusty Western boom town, a small, simple and reliable firearm was the order of the day. This .32 rimfire pistol was small and simple, exactly what most people needed.
The barrel pivots to the right for loading and unloading. There is an extractor connected to the frame, so that when the breech is opened the cartridge case is pulled out. The company and patent information is marked on the left side of the gun. The barrel is a part octagon, part round variant. The frame and the barrel are iron.
The overall condition is good. Original finish/patina. Strong action. Dim bore, slightly frosted with a bit of pitting at the muzzle end. Legible markings. Both grips are in good shape with expected handling wear.
