Description:
This is a 1st generation mismatched cavalry SAA with an unknown history.  I received this from the estate of Jake Grady after his passing.  Originally, I hoped that it was one of the government reworked Artillery Model SAA's, during the 1896-1903 period (rework done by Colt, Springfield Armory and the Manila, Philippines Arsenal, which blued the original case hardened frames).  However, the lack of inspector intials or proof marks leads me to believe that this was a private owner rework.  The frame is a U.S. stamped cavalry frame, serial numbered 18311, indicating a 1875 production date.  The trigger guard assembly has the four digit serial number 1146, indicating a 1874 maufacture date. The loading gate cover has a three digit 776 number.  At some point the original case hardened frame was blued, and there is evidence of the underlying case coloring showing through in some wear areas of the bluing.  The barrel is 7.5" long, chambered in .38 Special, with two one line roll stamps (COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .38 SPECIAL on the left side and COLT'S MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT.  U.S.A on the top).  The barrel's internal lands and grooves are in Very Good Condition.  The cylinder has no markings on it, has an evident spin ring and has the short cylinder flutes.  The hammer shows original case hardening finish.  The grips look period correct walnut, but show much less wear than the exterior metal surfaces, indicating that they are probably replacements.  The gun's overall condition is
Good/Very Good and is in Excellent mechanical condition (hammer still exhibits the four "stops" when cocking) and cylinder alignment is tight.  In short, a very nice base gun for a restoration, addition to a collection or shooter.  Individual parts alone are worth the price...
