Description: The Model 36, or as it was originally known, the Chief’s Special is one of the most influential revolvers in history. Many modern conceal carry revolvers have some relation to or take inspiration from this firearm. The Chief’s Special introduced the S&W J-frame onto the market as well the .38 Special chambered in revolvers small enough to be carried concealed. Previously, the only revolver small enough to chamber the .38 Special were the larger S&W K-frame models and Colt’s Official Police. Their size made concealment somewhat difficult. The J-frame was essentially a larger version of the I-frame which normally was chambered for the .22 LR, .32 S&W Long, and .38 S&W Short. Smith and Wesson modified the I-frame design to be longer and taller (the latter because of the use of a coiled mainspring rather than a coiled leaf spring) in order to fit the .38 Special. The Chief’s Special and the new frame design were such a success that S&W upgraded their I-frame models to the newer J-frame. The Chief’s Special was introduced in 1950 and was renamed as the Model 36 in 1957. It has spawned many variations, including the Model 37, 38, 40, 42, 50, 442, 637, 642, and others. The Model 36 shown was, according to the Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson, 4th Ed., produced during the 1969 – 1970 period. The revolver is in good condition with minor wear. There are some visible scratches on the front and rear edges of the cylinder and on the front right-hand side of the barrel. The bore is bright with clear rifling. Minus the scratches, the finish is in 95-98 condition in both the bluing and the color case hardening. The grips are checkered walnut and feature the standard S&W medallions. The box that comes with this revolver is not original to this gun, and was intended for a Model 30 in 32 S&W Long. It is in rough shape on one side.
