Description:
BEAUTIFUL, Engraved German DRILLING 16 GAUGE Shotgun CHRISTOPH FUNK SxS

With Red Deer Stag & Chamois Engravings

Here we present a Beautifully Engraved German Drilling in 16 Gauge by Christoph Funk, made circa the early 20th Century in Suhl, Germany. A Drilling (which is German for triplet) usually consists of two matching smoothbore barrels and a rifled barrel. These were imminently practical guns for the field as one could take anything from a squirrel to a stag or a grouse to a goose.

This is one of the fancier ones with wonderful nature-inspired engraving and horn accents. The trigger guard and cap on the pistol grip as well as the butt plate are of horn, with the butt plate being carved to resemble a basket weave pattern. Hand-checkered pistol grip. Deep engraving of red deer and chamois. Each smooth bore barrel has its own trigger. The hammers are manually cocked.

This one was a gun that had been in the family since the former owner’s grandfather came from Germany to the United States in the early-20th Century. He used it to put food on the table. It also looks like he removed the rifle barrel at some point, likely due to unavailability of the ammunition here in the US. This would have also lightened up the gun and made it a dedicated field gun for birds and rabbits, squirrels and the like.
The overall condition is very good. Original finish. The actions are excellent. The bores are smooth and bright. The stock is solid and mostly smooth—signs of use. A beautiful piece of German history!
