Turkish Rework of a Model 1888 COMMISSION RIFLE

Here we present an antique Turkish Ankara Gewehr 88 Bolt Action Rifle, also referred to as the Model 88 Commission Rifle, made circa the 1890s in Berlin, Germany with a production run between 1888 and 1899 and reworked at Ankara circa 1935.

In 1915, The Ottoman Empire joined the Great War with the Central Powers, and virtually from the start, the declining empire was critically short of many necessary weapons and supplies, rifles being one of them. The German Empire, seeing the desperate situation the Ottomans were in, wished to provide them with Rifles of some kind. However, all Gewehr 98’s were prioritized for use by troops of the German empire, meaning there weren’t that many rifles the Germans could ultimately give away. However, the Germans had a very large and relatively untouched inventory of Gewehr 88/05s, which are essentially ‘modernized’ Gewehr 88’s with the ability use charger clips and 7.92x57mm. In 1915, Germany sent tens of thousands of these rifles, one source citing it was most likely somewhere between 25,000 and 50,000 rifles. The Turks would utilize them throughout the war for various duties, before they were once again stored away and left to be unused after the fall of the empire in 1921. In the 1930’s, as War in Europe seemed imminent, the Young Turkish military was shocked to see how short they were of modern and effective rifles. Thus, an initiative began in the mid-1930s to both manufacture contracted Gewehr 98 and Vz.24’s, while also repurposing and further modernizing the old Gewehr 88/05’s. The Turks at the Ankara Arsenal made minor changes to the original design, most likely adding a notch on the front of the receiver for smoother stripper clip loading, as well as potentially heat treating the old rifles to strengthen them as much as possible.

As mentioned above, the Gewehr 88 was a late 19th-century German bolt action rifle, adopted in 1888. The invention of smokeless powder in the late 19th century immediately rendered all of the large-bore black powder rifles then in use obsolete. To keep pace with the French, who had adopted smokeless powder "small bore" ammunition for their Lebel Model 1886 rifle, the Germans adopted the Gewehr 88 using its own new M/88 cartridge, which was also designed by the German Rifle Commission. The rifle was one of many weapons in the arms race between the Germanic states and France, and with Europe in general. There were also two carbine versions, the Karabiner 88 for mounted troops and the Gewehr 91 for artillery. Later models provided for loading with stripper clips and went on to serve in World War I to a limited degree. Unlike many German service rifles before and after, it was not developed by Mauser, but rather the arms commission, and Mauser was one of the few major arms manufacturers in Germany that did not produce Gewehr 88s.

The overall condition is very good. Robust action. Semi-bright bore remains in good shape. This example sports a sturdy stock with less than expected wear. Legible markings. The numbers match, although the trigger guard is ill numbered. A layer of cosmoline was added at some point in time to the bolt and rear sight for preservation. “1935” dated barrel.
