RARE BARREL LENGTH 1894 SHORT RIFLE WITH 22" OCT. BARREL, FULL MAGAZINE AND CORRECT 1" SHORTER (83/8") THAN STANDARD FOREND (9 3/8"), .30WCF CALIBER, #816XXX, MADE 1915. Most short rifles have 20" barrels. Those 1894s with 22" have almost all been extra light rifles and often with pistol grips. Standard full octagon rifles in 22" are really scarce. This rifle retains fine deep blue on the barrel and magazine. All markings are sharp and clear. the barrel is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight that retains the elevation bar and a Marbles "Sheard" marked long blade/bead front sight. The receiver is mainly gray/brown with excellent screws and good blue on the loading gate. The wood appears to have been very lightly gone over a long time ago, but still has good wood to metal fit. The action is tight and the bore is slightly dark but excellent. According to the Winchester records for the 1894 (which only go through 1906), show that only 2,980 rifles (both round and octagon together) were made with 20" barrels and only 2,252 were made with 22" barrels. Considering that by 1906 Winchester had made 378,000+ rifles, 22" octagon rifles are pretty scarce!
