Description:
This antique presentation model of the Model 1853 rifled musket / target rifle made in London, England is absolutely beautiful.  The rifle was made by E.M. Reilly & Co., which according the barrel address was located on New Oxford Street in London.  This beauty was given out as a 2nd place prize in an 1860 military shooting competition.  The buttstock has a round sterling silver plague inlaid into the right side which is engraved "14 Devonshire VR - Dec.1860 - 2nd Prize".  Just ahead of the rear sight is the main presentation inscription in an acid-etched section: "Second Prize Rifle - Presented to the 14th Devon V.R. Christmas 1860 - By The Hon C. Denman MP".  From what we have learned so far, the "V.R." in 14th Devonshire V.R. stands for either Volunteer Rifles or Volunteer Reserves, either way it was part of the British Empire Military.  We are still working on researching the inscriptions and will add information here if we find it.  As to the rifle itself, it is a very finely-made presentation model of the Model 1853 rifled musket with beautiful engraving and workmanship.  The fit and finish of all of the parts is spectacular, and the metal to wood fitment is as perfect as humanly possible in the late 1850's.  Almost every single part of the rifle has some type of embellishment, whether it is the floral engraved screw heads, the fine scroll engraved barrel bands, or the creature head engraved on the head of the hammer (close-up picture provided).  The engraved brass triggerguard and tang has the serial number on it, serial number 11716.  The lockplate of this rifle still shows some faint original case colors, while the barrel exterior has turned to a gray/brown patina.  The bore in this rifle is superb, bright and clean with perfect sharp rifling throughout the barrel.  The rifling is actually recessed from the muzzle 1.5" inches or so, allowing for easier loading while at the same time protecting the rifling from damage.  The original hand-checkered English Walnut stock is in very good all-original condition overall.  It shows some dings, dents, and handling marks, but is free from any major damage or wear, and is free from any cracks or repairs.  This E.M. Reilly & Co. muzzle-loader comes complete with the original loading ramrod which features an integral gutta-percha sliding bore guide (pictured), as well as an original muzzle plug constructed of cork with an engraved brass top and thru-bolt (the cork had a felt covering at one time which is now almost entirely gone).  The action on this rifle is in perfect working order with two hammer positions, and the trigger is exceptional, breaking with a light pull with no slop or grit.  This truly was a "world class" musket when it was new, and remains today an amazing example of mid-1800's gunmaking.  If you have been looking for a "collector grade" cap and ball rifle for your collection that is truly beautiful and one-of-a-kind, this 1860-dated "2nd Place" Presentation rifled musket would be an excellent choice.  This rifle deserves to be displayed, and would be extremely hard to upgrade in terms of condition or quality.  Please give us a call if you have any questions.
