VERY FINE CONDITION NEW LINE REVOLVER, SCARCE .38 CENTER FIRE, #4058, MADE 1875. These very high quality pocket revolvers in .38 cal. were made in Rim Fire and Center Fire calibers and only 5,500 of both calibers combined, making them the most rare of the New Line revolvers made by Colt. The .38s were made from 1874-1880. By Comparison, 55,343 were made in .22 cal., 11,000 were made in .30 RF, 22,000 were made in .32 RF and CF and 7,000 were made in .41 RF and CF. If half of the 38s were made in rim fire and half in center fire (I believe more were actually made in rim fire) that would mean only 2,750 were made in .38 CF making these extremely scarce today. This one is in particularly nice condition with excellent markings and most of the nickel remaining, with some usual peeling/wear on the lower grip straps and some edges of the cylinder etc. Still retains good fire blue on the hammer back and is mechanically tight and excellent. with excellent bore. The walnut grips are excellent and have a small "flat" on each side at the lower sharp edge- probably for more comfortable vest pocket carry. Matching number on the cylinder. Best of all it has a FINE, full etched panel on the left side of the barrel "COLT NEW 38." These etched barrel markings usually wear off quickly. A grat 147 year old Colt.
