Description:
UNUSUAL REMINGTON-KEENE SPORTING RIFLE IN RARE .433 CALIBER (.43 SPANISH). Only about 5,000 of these early bolt action rifles were made by Remington from 1880-1883. The usual caliber was .45-70, but a few were made in .40 and .433 caliber. Either is quite rare. In fact, I've only seen .40 caliber chambered in deluxe rifles with pistol grips and half octagon barrels. the .433 or .43 Spanish was popular in the military rolling block rifles shipped to Mexico and Latin America. The caliber was popular in the American Southwest and Mexico during this time as the caliber was powerful and ammo was easy to come by. Considering the small number of Remington-Keenes that were made and that most were in .45-70, those chambered in .433 would make up a very small number of total production which also included carbines, a Frontier Model intended for arming Indian Police on reservations, Army rifles and Navy rifles. This is a fine example that still retains most of the aged blue on the barrel and magazine tube that is lightly mixing brown. I t also shows good blue on the trigger guard. The wood is dark and uncleaned and generally fine with one slight crack coming forward for 1 1/2" from the front corner of the loading gate on the bottom of the rifle that goes nowhere and is inconsequential. The rest of the stock is solid and shows tight wood to metal fit. It retains the original sling swivels and correct, original rear ladder sight with small front sight in the barrel band. The correct markings are on the top of the bolt and best of all, THE BORE IS MINTY BRIGHT! Caliber stamped "433" on the left rear of the action. A particularly scarce caliber in a very limited production Old West gun!
