U.S. MODEL 1852 NAVAL OFFICER’S SWORD DATED 1862 WITH ORIGINAL SCABBARD. 39” overall with 32” blade stamped on the ricasso “COLLINS & CO/ HARTFORD/ CONN/ 1862”. Gilded brass hilt with “U.S.N.” guard and “SEA SERPENT’ guillon. Gilded brass scabbard mounts. Very good and all original with original shark skin grip wrap and brass retaining wire. Much original gilding remains on the mounts. Blade with most of the original polish slightly patinated with maker stamp lightly struck with some minor loss. Scabbard leather worn and with a repair below the center mount. Belonged to Lieutenant John Pegram, Annapolis Class of 1863 who served on Admiral Dahlgren’s staff during the Civil War. From a Norfolk, Virginia family his brother Robert Pegram was Captain of the C.S.S. Nashville during the war. Some of the Pegram papers are in the Virginia Historical Society. SOLD |
