They were used as sniper rifles. They were only able to acquire a few of these. Had they been able to get more of them there may have been a different outcome to the Civil War. Whitworth was known for accuracy and these rifles were no exception. This one is in fantastic condition with about 95% original brown finish on the barrel. The breech side plate and hammer were case hardened and retain about 85% of the case color. The musket style stock is excellent with course checkering that shows very little use. Just a few minor dings and mars. The trigger guard shows some wear but still retains case color. Lower tang is marked "Best". 33 inch round barrel with a mint bore. Windage gauge front sight. Manchester Ordinance rear ladder sight. Lock plate has a crown with two dog heads and a "W" underneath it. This gun is extraordinary condition inside and out. Fitted in an English Oak case with the Whitworth label inside the lid. It has 3 covered compartments and several accoutrements including a loading tool, ebony handled screw drivers, leather covered powder flask and some cardboard casings. Also a box of Whitworth Cylindrical Projectiles and a box of Manchester Ordnance & Rifle Co. Hexagonal Projectiles 530 grains. Boxes show age and wear but still mostly intact. And to top it off is a set of antique shooting spectacles with amber lenses. This is a great outfit! This is the only cased set I have encountered in the 50 plus years I have been in the business.
