Amongst the most recongized and famous of all Lefever Shotguns known in the collecting fraternity, presented here is the remarkable special order Lefever 8ga perhaps made for United States President Grover Cleveland. The gun is unique in so many ways including the fact that it is the only original steel barrelled 8ga known to knowledgeable collectors. The gun was discovered in the mid 1990's by famed Lefever collector Dana Tauber in Washington State and came to him from a descendant of one of Cleveland's Cabinet members. He had the gun until around 2007 when it was acquired by a private Southeastern Collector. This is the first time the gun has been offered publicly for sale in more than 100 years! This exact gun is pictured on page 211 of the "Lefever - Guns of Lasting Fame book by Robert Elliott and the provenance of U.S. President Grover Cleveland is noted therein.
The gun itself is a spectacular Special Order Lefever of the highest quality. Made with 32" Whitworth Fluid Steel barrels, pushbutton splinter forend and originally had the rare forend ejector system. The barrel bolsters are nicely sculpted and breech ends of the barrels with sculpted butterfly wings as seen on the highest grade Lefevers. The action is finely case colored with chain link border engraving and geometric designs around the pins and screws. The top lever and trigger plate are geometric design engraved as seen in the photos. Stocked with a super piece of French walnut and has a gold shield near toe. The stocks are checkered in the finest quality with exceptionally fine panels behind the grip and on the forend as seen in the photos.
Overall the gun remains in superb original condition with more than 80% bold and vivid original case color. More than 95% plum brown original barrel blue and more than 95% original stock finish. The only thing that has ever been changed on the gun is the pad, which is a late 1920's Jostam pad and is hardening. The bores are brilliant and shiny and the mechanics are crisp. The gun has been used very little and remains in investment grade overall condition!
This gun has great collection provenance and is truly unique amongst Lefevers. As a serious student of Lefever shotguns for nearly 35 years, I can say with great confidence this is the single finest 8ga Lefever known and the 2nd most important Lefever with Presidential provenance behind the President Benjamin Harrison Gun.
