Description:
RARE 1899 FIRST MODEL MILITARY & POLICE (M&P) REVOLVER, .38 SPECIAL CALIBER, #20XXX, ONLY MADE 1899-1902. This is the great-grandfather of the famed M&P line that continues on even today! Millions have been made in various calibers and configurations, but the earliest is the First Model that is easily identified by the LACK of a  locking lug on the barrel bottom. On this model the ejector rod hangs unsupported like on early Colt revolvers. In 1902 the first model was discontinued and all models from then on had the locking lug on the barrel along with other improvements and changes through  the decades of production. This is one of the last of the First Models as serial numbers ran from 1 - 20975. It can be assumed this revolver was probably made in 1902. This example with 6 1/2" barrel- the longest length offered- has the desirable blue finish. As all in this model, it has a round butt with hard rubber S&W embossing. The grips fit perfectly and still retain the early patent dates along the bottom left edge- these often worn off. There is a hairline crack in the very bottom of the right panel that you have to look for to find and is minor. The serial numbers match on the frame, cylinder and barrel and all markings are sharp and clear. There is still some light case color on the hammer and trigger sides. Overall, fine blue remains with brown mixing on the outer portions of the cylinder and silvering on the back strap. The front sight has not been altered, the action is tight and the bore is bright and excellent. These rarely show up and most were service revolvers that saw hard use and lots of carry wear. This is a nice example.
