Description:
This is a nice example of an S&W-produced PPK/S. The PPK/S is a development of the famous PPK, a 1930’s design made famous by the James Bond character from Ian Fleming’s many spy novels. It was a development of the Walther PP model of 1929. The “PP” stood for “Polizeipistole” or “Police Pistol”. Contrary to popular belief, the “K” in the designation does not stand for the German “Kurz” or “Short” in English. The “K” actually stands for the German word, “Kriminal”, or literally “Criminal”. Thus the full name of the PPK is “Polizeipistole Kriminal”, referring to the Kriminalamt crime investigation office as the pistol was primarily intended for detectives and other undercover officers. Both the PP and PPK were the first truly successful double action pistols in the world. The latter was imported from Germany to the United States until 1968 when further importation was prohibited by the Gun Control Act of ’68. To pass the restrictions imposed by the GCA of ‘68, Walther combined the PPK slide with a PP frame, creating the PPK/S. To simplify everything, manufacture of both the PPK/S and the original PPK under license began in 1983, distributed by Interarms of Alexandria, Virginia. For a time, Walther allowed Smith & Wesson to produce PPK’s and PPK/S’ before finally setting up their own factory in Fort Smith, Arkansas. This example is in excellent shape and comes with quite a few accessories. The bore is in pristine shape with no rust or pitting. The metal has some light nicks on the safety and one just above it. There is one spot on the left of the slide near the muzzle that has a bit of shallow scratch. Other than that wear on the metal surface is fairly minor. The left grip panel has light wear to it. The grip screw has some rust on the head. There are four magazines, two of which are flush-fitting and two with the pinky extension. In addition to the pair of wood grips, there are two pairs of plastic Walther logo grips. The pistol has been fitted with a Wolff replacement spring set. Finally, there is a Midway USA pistol pouch.
