Description:
SCARCE Antique AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SHARPS & HANKINS Model 1862 NAVY Carbine

One of 6,686 Purchased by the Navy WITH ORIGINAL COVER!

Here we present an antique Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Navy Carbine. Made from 1862-65, the total production of the Navy Carbine was only 6,686, making this quite a scarce representative of a Civil War long arm. These carbines are believed to have seen extensive service aboard various vessels in both the Union's "blue water" and "brown water" navies during the American Civil War. Being that they were intended for use on the water, the Navy carbine was factory fitted with a very tight leather cover to prevent corrosion on the barrel, most of which have long disintegrated. Then, there is this one! Like mentioned above, most of these covers were long gone, unlike this fine example which retains the entire cover with only mild wear. The leather cover on the barrel is secured by a band at the muzzle and screws at the breech.  It has a band at the muzzle, a blade front sight, an adjustable rear sight, and standard Sharps & Hankins markings.

The shape of the carbine is distinctly Sharps (much like their pepperboxes) and operates a bit differently than other carbines of the era. The trigger guard doubles as a lever, which is opened by pressing a small tab inside the smaller loop of the lever. Opening the lever slides the barrel away from the recoil shield for loading and unloading. Great elevating rear sight and brass butt-plate. This example is marked “P/J.R.G.” for Inspector John R. Guldsbourough, Captain in the U.S. Navy.

The overall condition is fine. The leather wrap is in fine shape and virtually complete. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The walnut stock is mostly smooth and solid with just a small chip from the left side of the wrist where it meets the frame. Finding these carbines with the leather cover in such good shape is very rare.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 24 inches.

Caliber: .54 Rimfire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
