Description:
In 1862 the Army placed an order for 20,000 of these .44 cal. revolvers with this one being among the last delivered with SN 20318.  When the last one was delivered 21,050 had been supplied. The gun was so popular during the Civil War and that the Army followed up by buying an additional 24,000 of the later single action Starr Army revolvers.
The gun is relatively heavy at over 3 lbs. with a unique design that provides for splitting the frame with a hinge screw that enables replacement of the cylinder.  The Army model is about a ½ inch shorter that the DA Navy’s due to a shorter cylinder. Markings include the stamped STARR ARMS CO, NEW YORK mark below the cylinder on the right side of the frame and STARR’s PATENT JAN 15, 1856 stamp on the left side.  The serial number, 20318 , is stamped on the underside of the frame, on the inside of the hammer and on the hammer shank.  The inspection mark B is present on the frame separation points, the sides of the barrel, the trigger guard and the trigger.  There are clear cartouches showing Army inspector initials on both sides of the black walnut one-piece grips.
This gun is fully functional and in excellent condition and would be an excellent addition to any collection.
