Description:
One of the great rarities in all of London Best gun collecting - the great big bores in fine original condition. These guns were used very hard with little to no regard for future value or use during their period of service. This gun, truly a behemoth, is a 4 Bore with original 42" damascus barrel! It has a wedge fastened point pattern forend with large original finely fitted horn tip. The original nickel finished receiver is nicely scroll engraved as seen in the photos. Top of barrel with nice burst of scroll and makers name and address. The fine original English Walnut stock with long trigger guard and extended finnial. Gun opens with Jones Rotary Underlever which is nicely checkered at tumb and also very nicely scroll engraved. The forend has a fine shell carved area where it meets the frame and this gun is top shelf all the way!
Overall, the gun remains in really fine original condition. Barrel retains more than 90% original damascus pattern (all 42 inches of it!). Receiver retains nearly all of its original nickel plated finish with only very minor edge losses and hints of flaking and toning. Stocks are sound and retain most of their original finish with some finish added for preservation. The Silvers type pad is a modern replacement and I understand from the previous owner the pad had deteriorated to a point of no return. That is the only part of the gun that is not original - amazing for such a fine old big bore! The bore is bright and the mechanics are fine.
