Description:
This is a fantastic lot of items belonging to 1st Lt. Theodore A. McConnell, originally of Media, PA, and chronicles his career as a B-24 Liberator pilot flying "The Hump" between India and China during WW2 while serving in the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 436th Bombardment Squadron. McConnell accrued a total of 406 hours, 40 minutes of combat time over the course of 46 missions flown. The officer’s service coat is a government-issued example (size 36R) that has 1st Lieutenant rank insignia; a bullion embroidered 10th Air Force patch on the left shoulder; bullion embroidered CBI patch on the right; three ribbons above the left breast pocket: WW2 Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal (with three stars); and a Presidential Unit Citation ribbon over the right breast pocket. The coat is in excellent condition, as is the issue US Army officer’s garrison cap (size 6 7/8) that accompanies it. The remainder of the lot is contained within an original brown leather "PILOT’S NAVIGATION KIT / AIR CORPS / UNITED STATES ARMY" valise: McConnell’s inscribed Distinguished Flying Cross (with oak leaf cluster) in original presentation case; USAAC Ellington Field Class 43-1 yearbook and graduation booklet; a tattered original silk "Blood Chit" with printed linen recreation; numerous USAAC/USAAF identity cards, flight documents, and two personnel record folders; several "Short Snorter" banknotes (many of which are taped together); a Weems Aircraft Plotter in the original paper envelope; several 1944-dated photographs of McConnell and others, including the fairly well-known B-24J "SNAFU" (serial #42-73246), and a different B-24 following a crash landing. Additionally, the valise contains: some of McConnell’s post-war correspondence regarding his wartime service (primarily flying cargo to China, as well as bombing missions in Burma); a June, 1941 copy of LOOK magazine that has a cover story titled "Our Only Defense Is An Aerial Offense"; a copy of "Air Power: Key To Survival / With A Prologue On The Lesson Of Korea" by Alexander P. de Seversky (1950); post-war civil aviation notebook; and some fairly modern patches and vehicle stickers. This is a splendid piece of WW2 USAAF history, and would make a splendid addition to any collection.
