We are so proud to offer this fine example of Sam Colt's big wheel gun, the Dragoon. This was the big manstopper of the era, throwing a .44 caliber ball down its 7 1/2 inch barrel. This one is a second model, retaining the distinctive squareback trigger guard, but having the improved rectangular cylinder stops. Made in the year of our Lord 1851, she somewhat looks her age of 171 years. Despite all the pitting, wear, and dings, this revolver still functions very well. The hammer spring is strong, and the cylinder lockup is good at rest and at full cock. The rammer latch still functions, and the bore is still fairly good, with visible rifling. That is quite a testament to the basic design and quality of this big revolver. This may be one situation where signs of use can add to the value. If a revolver was employed in the bloodiest war in our history, with grueling field conditions, this is what it would look like. The serial number matches on all major components, including the rammer and grip. I don't see one on the wedge, but it may be there. The number on the cylinder is about the faintest I have ever observed, and I am very surprised I captured it with a photo. We have all seen the market flooded with phony Dragoons, using later issued guns or other Italian imports. Many of them look like new, despite the aging attempts. This gun, in our opinion, is an honest period example. If you have been looking for the right Colt Dragoon to collect or for investment, but don;t want to buy a phony or break the bank, then look no further. SOLD SOLD |
