Description: General Specs: Manhattan Firearms Co., Year 1860-1861, .36, 30.5oz Serial Number: 5009 In 1856 a group of New Jersey business men founded the Manhattan Firearms Manufacturing Company and took advantage of the expiration of Colts patent on revolving firearms expiring in 1857. Manufacturing began in Norwich, Connecticut and in 1859 they moved to Newark, New Jersey. Between 1859 and 1868, Manhattan Firearms produced approximately 80,000 Navy pistols. Manhattan Navy Series II included about 10,000 pistols made between January 1860 to September 1861. All Manhattan Navy type revolvers are .36 caliber. The gun has five safety notches machined into the cylinder allowing the pistol to be carried with all five chambers loaded with the hammer set between cylinders. The five safety notches are the quickest way to differentiate the Manhattan and Colt twins. This example has all matching serial numbers including barrel, cylinder, cylinder pin, frame, trigger guard, grip strap and even the barrel wedge. While the pistol shows its age in a nice overall patina the five decorative cylinder motifs are legible but faint. Considering that this gun is over 160 years old it is in remarkable shape with a great bore and the action moves smoothly while the trigger is crisp. The varnished grip panels showing age related character completes its authentic appearance. A great conversation piece and a wonderful addition to any collection, Colt or Manhattan!
