HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON .45-70 OFFICERS MODEL TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD, #9XXX, MADE 1971. As I always say when I get one of these fine rifles, the H&R Trapdoor Officers Model is one of the nicest U.S. made reproductions which are now long discontinued. In the Pet Loads book published from years of Handloader magazine articles by Ken Waters (available from Wolfe Publishing), in an early article on handloading the .45-70 Waters tested a number of rifles and the most accurate was the H&R Officers Model. They are nearly an exact replica of the rifle turned out by the Springfield Arsenal for officers heading west in the 1870s-1880s. These were engraved on the breech block, upper tang, barrel band, hammer, lock plate, butt plate and hammer screw. They were fitted with a sporting tang sight, wiping rod under the barrel, checkered sporting stock with engraved pewter tip and fitted with round 26" barrels. This one is marked on the left of the barrel 'U.S. MODEL 1873/ CAL. 45-70 GOV'T" and on the right side with the H&R name and address along with "MADE IN U.S.A." Most of these were turned out with plain, straight grain dark brown walnut. This one has some fancy grain in the butt stock. It also comes with a brass oval plaque that can be screwed into the butt stock (I wouldn't do it) that is engraved "OFFICERS MODEL/SPRINGFIELD RIFLE/HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON CENTENNIAL/ 1871-1971." Beautifully blued and case colored, these are still a bargain. This example is one of the prettiest ones I've seen and is flat new (no box)
