Description:
Handsome Boss 12 bore pigeon gun with 30” and 28” chopper lump barrels presented in its leather case with full accessories and maker’s labels. Made in 1932 Boss no. 7943 has lots of original case coloring and crisp Jack G. Sumner(4) engraving with 21 rose bouquets displayed on the action body, sideplates, and trigger guard. During the late 1920’s and early 30’s many wealthy sportsmen from around the world traveled to the south of France to shoot pigeons at the rings in Monte Carlo. Boss pigeon guns were at the pinnacle of their development and quality during this period. The pigeon guns of this era were often equipped with a second set of barrels for colombaire or perhaps a bit of game shooting in the surrounding countryside and were thus equipped with automatic safeties.    ***   This Boss has double triggers and ejectors. It has most of its original case coloring and the bluing is in excellent condition. Disc set strikers, rolled edge trigger guard, and weighs 7lb 6oz with the 30” barrels in place.   ***   The 30” and 28” nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells and London proofed for 1-1/4 oz. loads. The top of the right barrel on both sets is inscribed “Boss & Co., 41 Albemarle Street. Piccadilly, London. W.” Both sets of barrels are topped by a raised tapered hand filed rib. Bore Dimensions 30” Barrel Set: The right barrel is bored 0.731 with a constriction of 0.020 for Half choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.027. The left barrel is also bored 0.731 and has a constriction of 0.034 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.029. Bore Dimensions 28” Barrel Set: The right barrel is bored 0.732 with a constriction of 0.006 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left barrel is also bored 0.732 with a constriction of 0.020 for Half choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028.   ***   The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured European walnut and were replaced by noted English stocker David Trevallion. Nice satin hand rubbed oil finish with crisp checkering. There are a few tiny handling marks on the stock and one small area on the left side of the buttstock that shows a slight rub in the finish. Stock dimensions are 15-1/8” to a checkered butt by 1-3/8” by 1-7/8”. Cast off about a quarter-inch for the righthand shot.   ***   This rare Boss pigeon gun is presented in its leather case with maker’s labels, Boss snap caps, Boss oil bottle, two-piece mahogany cleaning rod and cleaning tools in a small leather case. It also come with an outer cordura cover.   ***   Not many Boss pigeon guns were ever made and so they do not come available very often. This high condition Boss is for the discerning sportsman who appreciates its handling characteristics, beauty, and the romance of its history.  ***   Please note that the photographs are part of the description.
