Payment Types Accepted: check, money order, cash Description: This is a late war extremely rare type 99 carbine. (wood butt plate, large recoil lug, no drain holes, simple peep sight, no handguard, no wings on front sight, no provision for ramrod, etc.) complete, late war (but not last ditch) Type 99. BUT ITS A CARBINE! It looks like a type 38 carbine but it is a 7.7, hence a type 99, has a 21" barrel rather than the 26" barrel of the rifle. I have read of experimental carbines such as this. This example was manufactured by the Toyo Kogyo Corp[oration and has no special marking to indicate that it was originally made as a carbine. I know of no factory that produced these on a regular basis but the action seems to be of standard manufacture. While it seems to be too slick (particularly late war) to be amateur work, it could be. It is true that the 26" barrel was extremely cumbersome in heavy jungle and I know that more than one soldier was killed when he tried to swing the 26" rifle around and it hung up on something. The type 44 was not available widely during the jungle campaigns on the islands and there was a need. This would have been a great piece of work if it was a field modification. But I do know that the Japanese experimentally modified a number of type 99 rifles. It was apparently cheaper thamn building a new type 44. But the project never got off the ground, ytoo l;ittle. too late. This rifle may very well be one of those, in which case it would be very rare indeed. But then I don't know if Bubba did it for sure, althoigh it would prbably be rougher. Anyway the wood is refinished with almost no removal, but not with the Sumac finish the Japanese used. The metal has been smoothed somewhat and nickel-plated. It makes tight groups at 50 yds. and the sights can easily be adjusted with pistol type sight adjusters. It has the ballistics of the British .303 and close to the American .308. Hornady, Steinel, Graf, Privi and others make ammo for it. There are reloading dies and data for it and I will happily share my knowledge with you because I reload. This is the strougest bolt action to come out of WWII. It will handle somewhat higher loads than the factory ones but if you put more powder in than recommended, watch your cases! This rifle will take down any game in North America and its a pleasure to shoot. I don't know whether to price it astronomically high because it is rarity or in the 1k + range because I don't know where the modification was done. Absent absolute proof, I guess I have to price it lower. This is a nice little rifle and you will enjoy it whether you take down Michigan White Tail or hang it on a wall-or both!
