European Fowling Piece
Here we present an antique Belgian Double Barrel Side by Side Shotgun, manufactured circa the 1850s likely in Liege, Belgium. During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States. This 10 gauge fowling piece was made in a great gauge to go after high flying geese and ducks. Its mid-length 33 inch barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s.
The overall condition is good. Robust action (the right hammer head skirt has a missing chip). The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid stock with less than average wear (light scuffs). This example is lightly engraved. Strong brown patina. The bottom of the right barrel is liege proofed at the breech end.
