Description:
Serial #8122, .476 Enfield, 6 1/4" barrels with excellent, bright bores. This is a strikingly handsome pistol that has retained 40-50% of the original blue on the barrels, with the balance turned to a mixture of smooth pewter gray and plum-brown. The maker's marking on the rib, proofs, and caliber designation are all crisp and clear, while the lustrous original blue still remains on the sides of the frame, and thumb-lever. The checkered walnut bird's head grips are in fine-excellent shape with some small surface blemishes, an area of mild wear under the lever on the left side, as well as some general flattening of the points. Lock-up is accomplished through a thumb-lever actuated stirrup along the top of the frame that engages two lugs on either side of the breech. The lock-up is superb, and the action is fully functional. The pistol is housed in the original five-compartment, green baize-lined, wooden traveling case. The Charles Lancaster label is heavily worn, but still clearly legible on the inside of the lid, and the pistol is further accompanied by an ebony-handled turn-screw, and period glass oil bottle. According to Lancaster records, this gun was sold in September of 1887 to a "T.W. Greenfield". There are three known British soldiers from the period with those initials and last name: Capt. Thomas W. Greenfield, 22nd Battalion, Devonshire Rifle Volunteers; Thomas William Bruce Greenfield, Protectorate Regiment Frontier Force, South Africa; and Thomas Waring Bunce Greenfield, Irish Guards. This is a very rare, cased four-barreled pistol, in fine condition, and represents an exceptional opportunity for the collector to acquire a stunning British handgun. Antique
