Description:
AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA EXCEPTIONAL FRENCH ELLIPTICAL-BORE BRONZE-BARREL FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS WITH SPRING BAYONET. Circa 1770. An outstanding blunderbuss in almost mint condition. 30½" overall with 15", bronze, part-octagon, part-round barrel with 2¾" wide bore. Fancy carved walnut stock with high-relief carving about the tang and on the underside of the stock about the triggerguard and extending all the way up the fore-end. Convex lockplate and hammer. Steel mounts with steel triggerguard having an acorn finial. Original steel ramrod. In brilliant, near-mint condition, it retains all of the original finish on the stock, and the metal surfaces are a nice, crisp, even patina. Extra crisp barrel with fine metal edges. Shows almost no use. The type that would have been used by French Privateers and French Vessels financed by the Court at Versailles including such vessels as the Bonhomme Richard. Outstanding and superb condition.
