We are absolutely proud to offer this highly sought after dual caliber Colt first generation Single Action Army. Any feature that sets a Colt apart from the "run of the mill" guns is what drives up the value. This wheel gun, with 2 calibers stamped on the barrel, instantly puts itself far above the mass produced single caliber guns. Only 173 were chambered like this, as compared to 150,000 in .45 Long Colt. The .44 Russian was developed in 1870 by Smith & Wesson. It mat not seem like a very important caliber, but it changed the course of firearm history. Russia approached S&W about supplying a military sidearm for their army, but military leaders were opposed to the externally lubricated bullets offered by S&W's .44 revolver cartridges. The bullet actually sat on top of the case, and the external lubrication grooves would not do well in rough field conditions. The solution was to reduce the diameter of the bullet to .429, allowing it to fit the lubrication grooves inside the case. The Russian spawned the slightly longer .44 Special, and it was the basis for the .44 Magnum, and all use the .429 diameter bullet. Made in the year of our Lord 1928, this first genny gun is in far better condition than we usually encounter. The blue is mostly intact, with some wear spots, but still rich and deep. The frame still bears generous amounts of case color, with beautiful flashes of blue that were hard to capture on film. The grips fit well and are in very good condition. The stampings are clear and sharp, and it appears this Colt saw little use. It came to us tethered, and it will go out the same way. Along with low use, the bore of the gunfighter length 4 3/4 inch barrel likely never saw black powder, and it is gleaming. All four clicks are there, and the action is smooth and crisp. The included Colt Archives letter proves the rarity of this revolver. The icing on the cake is that it was shipped to Bacharach Rasin Sporting Goods in Maryland. Bacharach learned the trade as an employee in another store, then opened his own store with the help of money pockets Rasin, and still exists today. This caliber was basically taken out of production in 1913, so this one gun shipment was a special order. All told, this is one handsome and desirable gun. If you have been looking for the right Colt SAA to collect or for investment, but want one few others will ever have, then look no further. SOLD Handgun Caliber: .44 S&W Russian |
