1840s BELGIAN MADE SWISS Military Pistol
Here we present an antique Auguste Francotte Swiss Model 1840 Percussion Military Pistol made circa the early 1840s in Liege, Belgium. There are few examples of this pistol in existence today, and even less in the condition this one is in, making it very rare.
Oberst Folst was the director of the arsenal in Morges, canton Vaud, Switzerland that developed this pistol. Though the reasoning for the development of this pistol is unknown, the contract went to Auguste Francotte in Liege, Belgium to manufacture them for the Swiss military. This model of pistol was the result of furthering the development of the 1839 Vaud Cantonal Ordnance Pistol. Auguste Francotte was the primary manufacturer of percussion weapons during the period of time when this pistol was manufactured.
“VAUD 176” is branded into the left side of the stock and stamped atop the barrel. Liege proofs and “AF”, for Auguste Francotte, is stamped in multiple places on this example.
The overall condition is near fine. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. The bore is smooth and clean for age and black powder use. The stock is smooth and solid with just a hint of a split behind the top of the tail of the lock. This is just about the heartiest sidearm you could possibly hope for.
