They also visually standout compared to their S&W and Webley counterparts. Perhaps the only regret is that the largest caliber they were chambered was the fairly small .38 S&W cartridge, leaving the S&W and Webley to chamber the larger types such as the .44-40 Winchester, .45 Schofield, and .455 Webley (the first two only in the S&W top break revolvers and the .455 being exclusively for the Webley). Nonetheless, H&R produced some very nice, reliable top break revolvers many of which hold up even today. The Model 999 Sportsman is one of the finest .22 revolvers ever made. One of its most remarkable features is its capacity of 9 rounds. Bear in mind, neither the S&W Model 617-2 or the Ruger Single-Ten existed until 1996 and 2011 respectively. In some ways, H&R’s Model 999 was way ahead of its time, being introduced in 1st Model iteration as far back as 1932! This example shown here is a 3rd Model Sportsman and was made in 1981. It exhibits the majority of its original finish though some rust is present in a few places. The are spots of pitting underneath but these have been cleaned to remove any rust. The left grip does not quite match the grip frame's contour. The bore is in fantastic shape with nor rust or pitting present. The grips show light wear, mainly with respect to finish. The front sight is raised up fairly high for some reason. The Sportsman is in great mechanical shape. It would make a nice addition to any H&R or revolver collection.
