J.P. Sauer & Son 1906 Model Mauser sporting rifle. Made in 1923 it is a factory custom .30-06 built on a 98 military Mauser action. The Mauser action is #80781, and the J.P Sauer serial number is #218937. Barrel is stamped "J.P. Sauer & Son, Suhl, Germany" and “30. US. SG. 1906. Mod. Mauser” and receiver is stamped “Waffenfabrik Mauser-Oberndorf”. It has a 21” barrel that is half octagon and half round with a full rib. The metal work features the engravings of two deer on the trigger guard and floor plate and engravings on receiver and bolt handle. The rifle has the original double set trigger and its original horn pistol grip cap and sling swivels. The receiver sight is a Lyman 35 and is set up for a quicker removal by having its own bolt stop and if you remove the bolt stop and sight, you can then put on the original bolt stop to make way for the scope. Some modifications have been done to the original rifle. The barrel has been drilled and taped for a one-piece Redfield or Buehler scope mount base. The bolt handle has been modified to open so that it will not hit a scope if one is mounted. The original folding sight is missing, and an insert added in its place. A Buehler scope safety replaced the original military safety. The front sight has an insert riser, and an extra bolt stop has been added to the Lyman sight. The original finish on the barrel has about 90% remaining. The stock shows age and wear including dings and scratches. The bore is in good condition, with some pitting, and the rifling is strong.
