CANE GUN w/Brass HORSE HEAD Handle Light & Effective “POACHER’S GUN” Here we present an antique Underhammer Percussion Cane Gun with a brass horse head handle manufactured circa the mid-1800s. A common accessory of the Victorian gentleman was a cane, walking stick, or umbrella. Cane guns were a natural evolution in such a society. Some were crafted during the late percussion era, but most are from the early cartridge era. Like cane swords and blades hidden within umbrellas, the cane guns served as deadly concealed weapons for a gentleman who didn’t want to carry a pistol within his jacket, or the scoundrel who desired an element of surprise at his side. Cane guns were even then a rarity and are now difficult to find. Most fell afoul of eventual legislation prohibiting concealed weapons in places such as Britain, and period examples, where permitted, are generally in the hands of private collectors and museums. This one would probably have made a better bludgeon with that heavy horse head top. The action would have taken both hands to get into battery, but it would have been doable given time. There are two small markings that look like they may have been proof markings but are difficult to make out (possibly Birmingham). There is also a later registration number stamped near the handle in the manner that some British guns were marked. The overall condition is good. The action is functional. The bore is smooth with a grey patina. The muzzle has a wooden piece that fits inside. The wooden piece may be a later replacement. In any case, it is a bit shy for actual use and would probably fall out. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 17 inches.
