RARE AND UNUSUAL COBRA IN .32 NEW POLICE CALIBER (.32 S&W LONG) WITH 3" BARREL, #174XXX LW, MADE 1966. The standard for this lightweight Colt was .38 Special caliber with 2" snubnose barrel. Gurney Brown who recently published the book SEVEN SERPENTS The History of Colt's Snake Guns, has a "rarity" chart for the Cobra that rates rarity from 1-5. As an example, a standard .38 Special would rate a "1" as would a 2" barrel and blue finish. The .32 New Police caliber is rated as a "4" with the 3" barrel rated as "3". This example shows very light handling with only a few minor scratches/scuffs to the aluminum frame. Even the grip straps retain nearly all the black finish. The steel cylinder shows about all the blue and the barrel has only the lightest of muzzle edge wear. The front face of the cylinder retains nearly all the blue indicating that this revolver was rarely if ever fired. The common checkered walnut grips have been replaced with nicely fitted very aged and mellow elk horn grips with brass escutcheons around the screw holes and a brass medallion on each side with a bull elk head (instead of the usual Rampant Colt). Excellent action and bore. One of the more scarce of the Post-War Colts.
