Description:
CONDITION: Colt First Model Dragoon (manufactured 1848-1850, with about 7000 made), serial number 3577.  It is a civilian model.  The bottom of the back strap is original period engraved "J.B. Chiles" in script letters. Numbers match on the frame, cylinder, barrel, back strap, and trigger guard.  I have not disassembled the gun to view the wedge or arbor. "Colts Patent U.S." on frame is distinct and clear, and the gun works fine mechanically, with 3 clicks and locking up tight.  The cylinder rotates properly when the hammer is cocked. The walnut grips have a few slight bruises but are otherwise very good.  Overall the gun is good plus (G+) condition.  First Model Dragoon revolvers were extensively used in Texas, the Southwest and California following the Mexican War. Surviving examples are scarce and inevitably show the effects of years of hard use. This is a solid example of an historic Colt First Model Dragoon revolver.  It belonged to Joseph Ballinger Chiles, an important original California pioneer.

Colonel Joseph Ballinger Chiles was born on July 16, 1810 in Clark County, Kentucky to Henry Chiles and Sarah Ballinger and was the grandson of Revolutionary War Captains John Chiles and Richard Ballinger, both of Virginia. Joseph also descends from Walter Chiles of Jamestown, Virginia who arrived in America in 1637. Mary Chiles, Joseph's daughter from his first marriage, was wed to business partner Jerome C. Davis, for whom Davis is named.  Before heading west, Ballinger moved to Missouri with his family and served in the US Army in the Seminole Wars and Mexican-American War.  He was a close friend of John C. Fremont---general, explorer, governor of Arizona, and the first Republican Party presidential candidate in 1856. Chiles was also a close friend of John Charles Fremont.  He provided supplies to Bear Flag rebels, led by Fremont in 1846, and escorted Fremont's children to California on his 1848 trek leading one of the first wagon trains across Carson Pass. Chiles testified for Fremont at his court martial in Washington on charges of insubordination following the Mexican War.  Chiles was an important businessman and landowner around what is now Davis, CA.  Chiles Valley is named for him.  Other extensive biographical and historical information can be found at these links:
